Good day, Ladies and Gentlemen. Come April 2010, we will welcome our 12th Intake of DHTB (Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Business) freshmen. A month later, our 7th and 8th batches would be graduating at the Temasek Convention Centre, Temasek Polytechnic. It would be another heartwarming occasion to see our students (graduates, I mean) in the smart dark blue gowns, walking proudly on stage, and receiving their well-deserved diploma from our Director of Temasek Business School. What a good time to be joining the tourism industry! For a while, some tourism and hospitality-related businesses had been facing challenges brought about by the global financial crisis. However, 2010 looks promising. Both the IRs (integrated resorts) are opening in Singapore. The Youth Olympic Games are happening right here in our city. Sentosa reported that 6.2 million people visited the resort island in the whole of 2009! Many exciting developments will continue to unfold here. And in the region, things are looking up too. In a 2009 report, The Asian Development Bank upgraded growth projections for Asia from 6% to 6.4% in 2010 [I] and commented that the region will be “poised to lead the recovery”.[II] Just as exciting are the happenings at Temasek Polytechnic.
