Learning at The Tourism Academy at Sentosa is beyond textbooks and classrooms. A range of methods is used. One of which is problem-based learning, a learning approach that focuses on problem-solving, analytical skills and independent learning.
Students are given the opportunity to work on real-life projects such as conducting a research on the satisfaction level of visitors or a sales promotion for actual companies. They also have the opportunity to get close-up views of the businesses like organising a mega event, and to exchange ideas with industry practitioners in forums.
Field trips are common as we believe students should see for themselves to appreciate what has been taught in the classroom. An educational tour to Pekanbaru, Indonesia, for example, allowed them experience beyond Singapore and to learn the different approaches to tourism development.
The Student Internship Programme is yet another important learning milestone. Students are attached to companies of their choice. They even get to negotiate with the employer on the training programme. A personal liaison officer helps the student to assimilate into the work-life and crystallise the learning.
